The election is an opportunity for Prime Minister Donald Tusk to bring an ally to the presidential palace.
As reported by Bloomberg, Parliament Speaker Shimon Kholovnia announced the decision in Parliament on Wednesday. If none of the candidates gets more than 50% of the vote, the second round will be held in two weeks, on June 1, he added.
It is noted that the election is an opportunity for Prime Minister Donald Tusk to bring an ally to the presidential palace who will help him continue reforms to restore the rule of law after almost a decade of nationalist rule.
These reforms have been repeatedly blocked by current President Andrzej Duda, an ally of the former Law and Justice administration whose term expires in August. The head of state of Poland can veto laws, appoint judges and shape foreign policy.
The mayor of Warsaw, Rafal Tszaskowski, who represents Tusk’s Civic Platform, and the little-known historian Karol Nawrocki, a candidate from the opposition “Law and Justice” will take part in the race.
Kholovnia is also running for president along with Magdalena Beyat of the Left Party and Slawomir Mentzen, leader of the far-right Confederacy party.
Currently, Tshaskovskyi is the favorite to win the race. The mayor of Warsaw led with 35.7% support in the IBRiS public opinion poll for broadcaster Polsat, followed by Nawrocki with 26.2% and Holownia with 10.1%.
It is noted that the mayor of Warsaw, who served as the minister for European Union affairs under the previous Tusk administration, is known for his liberal views on women’s rights and the LGBTQ community. The 52-year-old politician lost to Duda by a narrow margin in the preliminary 2020 presidential election.

The diplomat noted that Europe is much stronger than Moscow believes, while Russia is much weaker than many Europeans think.
