The Kremenchug city council decided to dismantle the monument to the sailors of the Dnipro military flotilla of 1938, which was installed in the Kryukiv district of the city.

This was reported by the spokeswoman of the city council, Yuliya Perepelyatnik, in a comment to Suspilne Poltava.

The decision was made on September 13 at a session of the city council in accordance with the Law of Ukraine “On Condemnation and Prohibition of Propaganda of Russian Imperial Policy in Ukraine and Decolonization of Toponymy”.

According to the spokeswoman, the dismantling procedure cannot yet be started due to the need to exclude the monument from the list of cultural heritage objects of the community. This process is coordinated with the capital authorities.

According to the report, the monument is dedicated to sailors of the Bolshevik Dnipro military flotilla who died during the Bolshevik invasion of Ukraine in 1918-1919. During the Second World War, the monument was destroyed by the Germans. It was restored in 1945, and reconstructed in 1989.

Historian Hanna Kapustyan notes that the monument is an element of imperial propaganda, which imposes a narrative about the “liberation” of Ukraine by Russia and emphasizes the Russian role in shaping Ukrainian history, which contradicts real historical facts.

“This monument is connected with the fact that supposedly the “Russian elder brother” came with the concept to liberate Ukraine from the bourgeoisie, from that imperial Russia. That is, who are the Kronstadt sailors, they came to Ukraine. Why did they come to Ukraine? They have nothing to do with Ukraine,” she explained.

Kapustyan added that the monument itself has nothing to do with Ukraine, but only emphasizes “imperial policy”.

“Glorify the “elder brother”. The Kronstadt sailor is the Russian “elder brother” who allegedly brought freedom, brings freedom to Ukraine. And in essence, this is a new consolidation of consciousness, this is the spread of communist narratives to society,” the historian concluded.

On Wednesday, June 5, communal workers dismantled the pedestal of the monument to Alexander Pushkin in Kharkiv.

During the full-scale war in Ukraine, 34 monuments to the Russian writer Alexander Pushkin were dismantled. The first was demolished in the city of Mukachevo on April 7, 2022.

We will remind you that earlier the Vilnius City Self-Government Council was preparing to consider the issue of renaming the Alexander Pushkin Literary Museum to the Markuchiai Manor Museum.

Earlier we wrote that the mayor of Chernivtsi, Roman Klichuk, announced that the second and last monument to the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin was dismantled in the city.

We will also remind you that the Dnipro City Hall has determined the place where the monuments related to the former USSR and the terrorist country Russia will be temporarily moved. This is not yet a final decision on the fate of such monuments.
