Details: The incident happened in the city of Mandra, where Ukrainians gathered from other settlements to the monument to Taras Shevchenko in order to hold commemorative events there.

Direct speech of the Ambassador: “On Saturday, during a peaceful event dedicated to the Holodomor Memorial Day in Ukraine, a group of aggressive individuals under communist flags and slogans attacked Ukrainians, among whom a significant number were women and children of Ukrainian schools and associations…

According to the testimony of the participants, the attackers, armed with communist symbols, blocked access to the monument and also resorted to aggressive actions. Insults and threats began to flow.”

Details: In the video attached to the post, you can see clashes and even the use of pyrotechnics. There are about two dozen opponents of the action.

The priest also mentioned that a representative of the Ukrainian embassy was injured as a result of the actions of unknown persons, which was later confirmed in an official statement.

“Greece is a European democratic state that has taken in thousands of Ukrainian children and families who were forced to seek asylum due to Russian aggression. However, this case came as a shock to the community, especially considering that the attack took place at an event that was supposed to emphasize the importance of remembrance about the tragedies of the past,” writes the Ambassador.

“This incident once again raises the question of who really are ‘fascists’, if aggressive behavior is demonstrated by those who advocate for freedom of speech and democracy… In addition, it raises the question of whether the support of some groups for pro-Russian propaganda in Europe can pose a real threat to civil peace,” he added.

What preceded: During the day, a number of Western leaders made statements on the anniversary of the Holodomor, and Western ambassadors to Ukraine joined the official commemoration of the Holodomor victims in Kyiv.

Today, the parliaments of about three dozen countries around the world, as well as the European Parliament and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, have recognized the Holodomor as genocide of the Ukrainian people.

In September 2024, the Swiss parliament adopted such a decision.
