The most high-profile incidents occurred in the city of Bielefeld in the West of Germany (North Rhine-Westphalia), where two 18-year-old teenagers died from the use of homemade pyrotechnics.

These two incidents, despite the similarity of the reasons, were not related to each other and happened in different areas of the city. In both cases, the improvised explosive device went off in close proximity to the boys who intended to use it, causing serious facial and head injuries. In one of them, the 18-year-old victim died on the spot, in the other, they tried to save his life, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Explosions of pyrotechnics with serious consequences also occurred in other regions. In Rostock, a 14-year-old boy lost his arm due to a firecracker explosion, in Leipzig, a 16-year-old girl was seriously injured.

National statistics of injuries due to pyrotechnics in Germany are rarely reported, but the scale of the incidents is evidenced, for example, by the statistics of Berlin. A Berlin emergency hospital reported 25 injuries, including “severe hand injuries, partial or complete amputation of fingers or parts of the hand.” 8 injured people who ended up in the hospital due to explosions of pyrotechnics are children “whose lives were forever changed by these serious injuries”.

As reported, in Germany, the head of the association of doctors celebrated the new year called for a ban on fireworks.

Meanwhile, specialized associations reported that the demand for fireworks is growing in the country despite calls for strict restrictions.

meanwhile in Lithuania only fireworks were allowed to be set off in two large cities for the New Year.
