On Monday, December 22, 2025, in the center of Chernihiv, unknown persons committed an act of vandalism, damaging the menorah, a symbol of the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah. In addition to the physical damage to the religious building, the perpetrators left a discriminatory inscription on the site, which contains calls for violating the equality of citizens on religious and national grounds.
This was reported by the National Police of Ukraine.
At the scene of the incident, the investigative and operative group of the Chernihiv District Police Department promptly began work. Law enforcement officers are inspecting the area, studying CCTV footage and interviewing possible witnesses of the incident to identify the persons involved.
Currently, the issue of opening criminal proceedings is being resolved. The event is preliminarily classified under articles related to hooliganism and violation of equal rights of citizens (Article 161 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). Such actions in the conditions of martial law are considered not only as vandalism, but also as an attempt to incite internal enmity.
