The National Department of Transport Infrastructure said the central span of the 533-meter-long bridge, which connects the towns of Estreita in Maranyan state and Aghiarnopolis in Tocantins state, collapsed in the afternoon. According to officials, a tanker truck carrying acid fell into the water.
According to the fire service, the death of one person has been confirmed, and one person has been rescued.
According to preliminary estimates, at least 11 people were involved in the accident: two trucks, a car and a motorcycle fell into the river, the depth of which exceeds 50 meters.
By early evening, rescue divers stopped their work after discovering that sulfuric acid was leaking from one of the submerged trucks, the Tocantins fire department said.

The Joscelin Kubicek de Oliveira Bridge, opened in 1960, was built of reinforced concrete and is part of the BR-226 highway that connects Brazil’s federal capital with Belém, a northern city that is set to host next year’s UN Climate Change Conference.
