On Saturday, June 21, the oppositionist Sergei Tikhanovsky was released in Belarus. This was possible after the visit of the US Special Representative for Ukraine Kellogo Kellog to Minsk. This was reported by Our Niva.
The former political prisoner has already left the territory of Belarus, the publication notes. Natalia Dulin, Associate Professor of Minsk State Linguistic University, was also released from prison.
– Thanks to the solid leadership of President Trump, 14 prisoners were released today from Belarus. We thank the Lithuanian Government for cooperation and support – they remain a reliable friend and an ally, – said Kellog’s deputy John Cole.
In 2020, Tyanovsky announced his intention to run for president. However, before the official start of the campaign, he was detained during a election picket in Grodno. Subsequently, Oleksandr Lukashenko publicly stated that he had ordered the arrest of Tikanovsky, accusing him of an attempt to organize the Maidan in the country. After the arrest, Tikhanovsky supported his wife Svetlana, who ran in the elections and became a symbol of Belarusian resistance.
