Three operating Ukrainian nuclear power plants (Khmelnytska, Rivne, and South Ukrainian) were forced to reduce their capacity against the backdrop of Russian strikes on energy facilities in Ukraine, the International Atomic Energy Agency reported.

In a statement published on November 19, the IAEA emphasizes that the unstable situation with nuclear safety was highlighted that day at three nuclear power plants in Ukraine: four out of nine reactors reduced power after Russian attacks “which further destabilized the power grid.”

As the IAEA points out, two of the power plants, Khmelnytska and Rivne, reduced their electricity production as a result of hostilities earlier this month, and on November 19, both plants reduced their production even more after they each lost connection to one of their high-voltage power lines. IAEA teams based at the two sites were also forced to seek shelter during the morning alert due to an air alert, the agency said.

Meanwhile, the South Ukrainian NPP, according to the agency, also lost contact with the high-voltage power line, and the station’s administration reported the detection of 11 drones during the night one kilometer from the location of the NPP.

“The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is not the only one affected by the instability of the power grid. Military actions continue to affect the power grid throughout Ukraine,” said IAEA Director General Raphael Grossi at a meeting of the agency’s Board of Directors.

The agency added that on November 19, the connection of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant to the main power line was restored, “which is an important step to ensure nuclear safety at the facility”, “however, the general situation remains unstable against the background of the continuation of the military conflict.”

The Russian military regularly attacks Ukrainian regions with various types of weapons – attack UAVs, rockets, anti-aircraft missiles, and anti-aircraft missiles.

The leadership of Russia denies that the Russian army during a full-scale war inflicts targeted strikes on the civilian infrastructure of the cities and villages of Ukraine, killing the civilian population and destroying hospitals, schools, kindergartens, energy and water supply facilities.

The Ukrainian authorities and international organizations qualify these strikes as war crimes of the Russian Federation and emphasize that they are purposeful in nature.
