President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi met with the leader of the largest opposition party “Progressive Slovakia” Michal Shimechka.

“Friday. I was waiting for one leader of Slovakia – another one arrived. The meeting with Slovak parliamentarians was good. The delegation is headed by Michal Shimechka. We talked very concretely and constructively,” he wrote in a telegram after the meeting.

Zelensky noted that Ukraine is grateful to the people of Slovakia for their support, and is ready for an open and mutually beneficial dialogue on all issues, including energy.

“This dialogue should strengthen our nations – Ukraine and Slovakia, not Moscow. I am glad that we can find an understanding with the Slovak side and give proper answers to questions in the field of energy security and geopolitical certainty,” the president added.

Michal Shimechka noted after this meeting that he has a clear message from Zelensky for Slovakia – Ukraine appreciates Bratislava’s support and is interested in the best relations and cooperation – including in energy.

“And she (Ukraine) is ready to negotiate. This is exactly what I am urging Robert Fitzo to do now. We succeeded in reopening the door that Prime Minister Fizo so unjustifiably slammed with his aggressive attacks. Instead of working, he went to Moscow to bow to the dictator and did nothing for the people of Slovakia,” he wrote on the social network Kh.

The Slovak opposition announced on January 15 that it will initiate a vote of no confidence in the government of Robert Fico, accusing the prime minister of rapprochement in foreign policy with Russia, rather than solving the country’s internal problems.

On January 13, Fico said that Slovakia loses 500 million euros a year due to the cessation of gas transit from Russia and offered a meeting with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, on the territory of Slovakia. The Ukrainian president invited Fico to Kyiv this Friday, January 17.

After that, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said that he could meet with Zelensky in the next few days, but did not specify where this meeting might take place.

Fico traveled to Moscow last month for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on ending the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine, but did not visit Kyiv.
