Carbon monoxide is one of the most dangerous threats during power outages and the use of generators or furnaces. It has no smell, its poisonous effect begins to manifest itself quickly, but often imperceptibly. The easiest way to protect yourself is to install a carbon monoxide sensor, writes the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.

During power outages, many people use generators, gas stoves, or furnaces. At the same time, carbon monoxide can be formed – colorless and odorless, which very quickly poisons the body. Symptoms of intoxication often go unnoticed, and the consequences can be fatal.

“To protect yourself and your family, be sure to install a carbon monoxide detector in the room where generators or gas appliances are operating,” experts advise. Such a simple step helps to recognize danger in time and avoid tragedy.

According to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, the following rules should be followed when using household heat sources:

  • Do not use generators, gas or solid fuel appliances in rooms without ventilation.
  • Make sure vents and chimneys are not blocked.
  • Do not leave children unattended near the stove or generator.
  • If you suspect carbon monoxide, leave the premises immediately and call the rescuers.
  • Regularly check the condition of equipment and safety sensors.

The State Emergency Service emphasizes that even a short contact with carbon monoxide can be dangerous. Therefore, the main thing is prevention, the correct location of devices and constant monitoring of safety.

“Do not risk your own life and the health of loved ones. Carbon monoxide is imperceptible, but deadly,” the rescuers emphasize. Stay alert during power outages and be sure to monitor ventilation to keep your home safe even in challenging conditions.
