The actors of Grand Theft Hamlet talked about the filming / Photo – Rockstar GamesGrand Theft Hamlet, the first movie shot entirely in GTA Online, is getting ready to hit theaters in the US. This is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic Hamlet, but in a very unusual setting and conditions.Actors Sam Crane and Mark Ustverven during the 2021 quarantine decided to brighten up the forced isolation in an unusual way: they tried to play “Hamlet” just in GTA Online. This is how the idea of a full-length documentary was born, which has already received several awards and collected a significant 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Back in the spring, at the SXSW festival, the film won the prize for the best documentary film, and its co-writers, Sam Crane and director Pinny Grylls, were honored at the British Independent Film Awards. The main feature of the project is to collide the classic play with the harsh atmosphere of GTA 5, where Shakespeare’s monologues suddenly sound against the background of flying shells.
The film’s director believes that under such conditions they have returned to the theaters they were in Shakespeare’s time. At that time, these were not institutions of high culture, but rather of mass culture, where different layers of society gathered, including marginal ones, Grylls recounts Crane’s words:
“You [співрежисер Сем Крейн] told me at the very beginning: ‘It feels like I’ve gone back 500 years to the Globe Theater, where people threw apples at the actors… or there were prostitutes walking around all the time, and everyone was selling something.’ Theater in Shakespeare’s time was just like that. It was a public entertainment, not a dark hall where everyone has to sit in silence.”
Grand Theft Hamlet is now in UK cinemas and will arrive in the US on January 17th. After the release, the premiere of the film is expected on Mubi streaming.
