The main intelligence department of the Ministry of Defense can be headed by the head of the Foreign Intelligence Service, Lieutenant General Oleg Ivashchenko.

People’s deputy Yaroslav Zheleznyak wrote about this in a telegram. He pointed out that at one time Andriy Yermak, who incited conflicts between Budanov and Zelensky, tried in every way to promote Ivashchenko to the head of the GUR.

“What is interesting is that there was a lot of information that Budanov would be allowed to choose one of his deputies of the GUR for this position. And Ivashchenko was previously assigned to Yermak’s quota. Now I am not convinced that this is so. And the latter wanted to replace Budanov with him many times. It turns out that Yermak will finally be able to replace Budanov with Ivashchenko))). To be honest, I don’t think he saw it that way,” the deputy said.

Oleg Ivashchenko was born on September 9, 1969. He graduated from the Kyiv Higher Combined Arms Command School, the National Defense Academy of Ukraine, the University of Economics and Law, and the Kyiv-Mohyla Business School. Candidate of Military Sciences. Served in the Armed Forces in positions both in Ukraine and abroad.

2015 – 2019 – first deputy chief of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine – deputy chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine for intelligence.

2019 – 2024 – First Deputy Chief of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine – Intelligence Assistant to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

On March 26, 2024, he was appointed head of the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine by decree of the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi.

From March 29, 2024 – a member of the Staff of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. At the same time, he was included in the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine.

Earlier, Lieutenant General Kyrylo Budanov officially confirmed that he agreed to head the Office of the President of Ukraine after the corresponding proposal of Volodymyr Zelenskyi.

The appointment of Budanov may indicate the strengthening of the security and defense vector in the work of the Office of the President against the background of the war and the difficult international diplomatic situation.

The appointment of Kirill Budanov to the position of head of the Office of the President is unlikely to strengthen the former head of GUR . Political scientist Volodymyr Fesenko believes that the new chair will rather add problems and challenges to him.

Budanov’s appointment is neutralized a potential candidate in the presidential elections.
