Times vary significantly by location, particularly depending on whether it’s located on a high street, in a station or in a shopping centre.

Opening hours vary across different Greggs locations around the UK, but most open their doors between 6am and 7.30am.

The chain’s usual closing times vary, generally ranging from 6 pm to 11 pm.

But over Christmastime, there’s likely to be even more variation.

What is known is that every one of Great Britain’s Gregg’s branches will close for the entirety of Christmas Day.

The bakery explained: “The holiday season is one of the busiest times of the year, and for many in the UK, grabbing a warm coffee or a bake from Greggs is part of the routine.

“But with Christmas and New Year just around the corner, you might be wondering if your local Greggs will be open during the festive break.

“The Greggs holiday hours can change depending on the day and location.

“Most stores adjust their schedules for Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day, while Sunday hours may also vary in some areas.

It added: “If you’re planning to grab a quick breakfast or a festive bake on Christmas Day 2025, you’ll have to wait a little longer.

“All Greggs stores across the UK will be closed on Christmas Day so staff can spend the holiday with their families.

“Even Greggs locations inside service stations, airports, and retail parks stay closed on December 25th.

“This has been a long-standing tradition for the bakery chain, giving employees a well-deserved day off before the busy Boxing Day rush.

“If you’re craving your favourite Festive Bake or sausage roll, you can grab one again the very next day when most Greggs branches reopen.

“Until then, it’s best to plan ahead and pick up your favourites on Christmas Eve, as stores usually close early around 5pm.”

To avoid disappointment, it’s recommended that you check your local store’s opening hours before heading out.

A Greggs spokesperson said: “The most accurate way to find out if your local Greggs is open is to use our Shop Finder which will update opening hours automatically to reflect any changes.”

You can find the bakery brand’s shop finder tool here.

But for those of you who just need a Christmas Day cake or pastry, a handful of Gail’s bakeries will be open on the big day.

Greggs first opened for business in 1951Credit: Alamy Greggs’ high street takeover Greggs was first launched in 1951, after being founded by John Gregg.

After expanding rapidly throughout the twentieth century, it acquired the Bakers Oven chain in 1994 and took over its 165 stores.

By 2011, there were 1,500 branches of Greggs, and that number has since rocketed to more than 2,600.

Greggs opened its biggest store in 2022, when it unveiled its landmark eatery in the Primark store in Birmingham city centre.

The chain opened a sister cafe at their Oxford Street store, complete with neon lights and futuristic TV menus.

It also collaborated on a designer range of clothes with Primark and continues to update its menu.

Greggs also offers seasonal promotions, including personalised gift boxes for Mother’s Day.

Greggs’ incredible online popularity

Greggs is one of the most talked about eateries on the high street.

Fans regularly swap tips about how to get the most bang for their buck when eating at the bakery.

One particular hack went viral in Spring 2025, when fans realised that there were a network of Greggs outlets across the UK.

The outlets were revealed to sell sausage rolls for just 45p.

Shoppers went wild for the bakery’s new mac and cheese, as well as its other offerings.

The bakery regularly hosts holiday themed events, including a £15 Valentine’s Day meal and its wide Christmas range of products.

Greggs has become so popular that it even launched its own Christmas advert in 2024 – starring none other than Nigella Lawson.

However, the brand shocked everyone in March 2025 when it announced it might shrink the size of its beloved products.

The Greggs CEO Roisin Currie revealed that weight loss jabs might affect customer’s taste and could put them off baked goods.

Shrinking the products is one way of appealing to a market with reduced appetites.
