The international environmental non-governmental organization Greenpeace (Greenpeace) won a lawsuit against the Dutch government, in which activists demand to accelerate the reduction of nitrogen emissions.

This is reported by Ukrinform with reference to NOS.

“Greenpeace won the case against the state, the court obliged the government to speed up measures to reduce nitrogen emissions,” the message reads.

It said a court in The Hague had upheld a lawsuit by Greenpeace demanding that the government accelerate reductions in nitrogen emissions to meet reduction targets for the coming years.

In addition, if the state fails to ensure the achievement of the 2030 goals, a fine of 10 million euros will have to be paid.

The court noted that the current government had rolled back a number of measures that were needed to reduce nitrogen emissions and instead had not introduced new policies to meet those targets. While the previous government allocated more than 24 billion euros to achieve the goals, the current government reduced these expenditures to 5 billion.

Greenpeace welcomed the decision and said they expect responsible actions from the government.

As Ukrinform reported, a group of Greenpeace activists staged a short protest against climate change near the main hall of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland.
