Golf SUSPENDED by 60mph winds as Storm Amy causes chaos at Alfred Dunhill Links Championship with Ryder Cup hero leading

ROBERT MACINTYRE hit just one shot in his pursuit of the Alfred DunhiIl Links Championship title, before play was suspended for the day because of high winds.

The lingering effects of Storm Amy means St Andrews, Kingsbarns and Carnoustie were battered by 60mph gusts.

Players ducked for cover in the hope the delay would be short but organisers later confirmed the action had been cancelled until Sunday.

The third round will now continue at 9am tomorrow across all three courses.

The entire field of 164 players – and the same number of pro-am competitors – were out after a rare shotgun start to try to get the third round completed.

There were two groups starting from the same tee on some holes. Including the MacIntyre-Tyrrell Hatton pairing.

The Ryder Cup stars teed off on the seventh at St Andrews ten minutes after the English duo of Jordan Smith and Eddie Pepperell.

Scotland’s MacIntyre, the joint leader with South African Richard Sterne through 36 holes on 12 under par, pulled his tee shot into the light rough down the right of the hole.

Hatton split the fairway with a booming drive. But the hooter sounded to end play before they even reached their balls.

The main excitement for the big crowd was provided by tennis star Andy Murray, who was playing alongside Pepperell.

The two handicapper was inches away from holing a forty footer for birdie on the seventh, tapping in for par just before play was suspended.

Sterne was in action at Carnoustie, where he opened with a par on the short 13th hole.

With no immediate prospect of the wind calming down, most of the competitors headed back to their hotels, most of them  looking pleased to escape the freezing cold conditions.

Many of them were wrapped up in four or five layers in clothing, and it was difficult to recognise some of the celebrities, including husband and wife actors Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

At least the organisers managed to complete the second round. Nearly thirty players headed out at 8am to finish off the holes they were unable to tackle on day two, when play was halted because the courses were waterlogged.
