Permits issued by the German government to export weapons and military equipment may reach a new record.

This was reported by dpa with reference to the Ministry of Economy’s response to a parliamentary request from the left-wing populist Sara Wagenknecht Alliance, Ukrinform reports.

In total, as of October 15, 4,163 export permits were issued for the amount of €10.9 billion. Two-thirds of the cost, or €7.2 billion, is actually military weapons.

The total amount for the whole of last year reached €12.2 billion, which was a record.

The growth is largely explained by exports to Ukraine. According to information previously published by the Ministry of Economy, €4.9 billion worth of materials were approved for Ukraine in the first half of the year.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz lifted the ban on arms exports to combat zones in a landmark speech on February 27, 2022, and Germany exported more weapons last year than ever before.
