Ukraine ordered 18 more IRIS-T air defense systems from the German company Diehl Defense. Currently, the Ukrainian military already operates nine such installations and is interested in additional units, writes DW.
CEO of Diehl Defense Helmut Rauch said that the company plans to significantly expand the production of fire installations for the IRIS-T SLM and IRIS-T SLS systems. “In the medium term, we plan to expand production to 16 firing units – in about two years. If we see more demand from our customers, we will be able to increase production even more,” said Rauch.
This year, the company expects to produce up to ten units. Diehl Defense is also working on the development of the IRIS-T SLX missile with a flight range of 80 kilometers. According to Rauch, Germany has already expressed interest in the new missile, and Egypt has already ordered it.
The IRIS-T SLX is expected to enter serial production in 2029.
Ordering additional air defense systems will be another step towards strengthening Ukrainian air defense and protecting key facilities from air and missile threats.
