Germany: the court rejected the lawsuits of the far-right AfD party against the heads of Bundestag committees

Germany’s constitutional court on Wednesday rejected a complaint by the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party to remove it from leading parliamentary committees.

The decision concerns two lawsuits filed by the parliamentary faction of the party, which has 77 of the 733 seats in the Bundestag (the lower house of the German parliament), writes DPA.

Judge Doris Koenig explained that the rules governing the election and dismissal of committee chairs are within the competence of the Bundestag.

The AfD filed the complaint after the traditional parties united to deny Alternative for Germany lawmakers the chance to chair three committees – health, interior and development – in the Bundestag after the 2021 election. The party claimed that its rights to equal treatment as a parliamentary group and to fair application of the Bundestag’s procedural rules had been violated, but the court dismissed the complaint.
