Details: The warning from Habek, who is the front-runner for the Green Party in Germany’s February 23 election, came on the same day as a somewhat more positive statement from his center-right opponent Friedrich Merz, who called Trump “very predictable.”
Speaking at the pre-election rally of the “Greens” in Munich, Habek said that the EU country “with the largest trade surplus [Π·Ρ Π‘Π¨Π] – this is Germany, and this is the thorn in Donald Trump’s side.”
While Trump can only impose punitive trade measures against the entire EU, “you can be pretty sure that the tariffs that he might want to impose will be targeted in a way that will hit the German economy particularly hard,” Habek said.
In the past, Trump has vented his anger at the European Union for not buying enough American cars or agricultural products, and is said to be “obsessed” with the number of German cars on the streets of Manhattan.
Habek said that the EU is ready to “fight back” against US tariffs, but argued that Germany should do more to strengthen Europe. “No matter what the next German government wants to do, it should do it in a European way,” he said.
What happened before: During a 45-minute conversation between Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and US President-elect Donald Trump, the latter did not back down on his threats to impose high tariffs if Denmark does not give up Greenland.
