Germany will supply Ukraine with innovative combat drones with AI technologies – the first of them are already being used on the battlefield. This was reported by the German publication BILD on November 18.
The highly classified new superweapon from Germany is already being used in eastern Ukraine “in real conditions” after successful tests. From December, the mass supply of drones will begin: several hundred units per month.
German artificial intelligence company Helsing signed in September 2024 contract with the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine for the supply of 4,000 so-called “strike drones”. The financing is carried out as part of the modernization program initiated by the German federal government.
These drones are not ordinary human-controlled kamikazes, but high-tech aircraft with artificial intelligence. In the professional environment, they earned the nickname Mini-Taurus.
AI software helps control drones. Like Germany’s Taurus cruise missile, the delivery of which has not yet been approved by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the Helsing drones are equipped with software that makes them virtually immune to Russian GPS jamming and other electronic warfare techniques.
– The drone itself analyzes the terrain, using thousands of landmarks to determine its location. This helps the operator maintain course even in difficult weather conditions or destroyed areas. When the target is found and the operator confirms it, the drone independently hits the target. Helsing drones can hit targets even in the event of loss of radio communication, if the soldier issues a command in advance. Their accuracy is significantly higher compared to fully manually controlled combat drones, a defense industry source said.
In addition, they attack Russian targets from the direction of the sun (under appropriate weather conditions), leaving minimal time for reaction.
German drones have a range four times greater than ordinary Ukrainian kamikaze drones. They carry enough explosives to destroy Russian tanks and shelters, and can hit moving targets from the air.
The price for one drone is much lower than American analogues (Switchblade 600 costs about 100,000 euros) or Russian (Zala Lancet – 35,000 euros).
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius confirmed future deliveries of drones.
– I am very happy that the delivery of these AI strike drones is starting right now. These weapons will allow the Ukrainian armed forces to strike high-priority Russian military targets, such as command posts or logistics facilities, he said.
The minister also noted that high-tech drones can overcome electronic protection measures by Russian troops. Pistorius was personally convinced of their effectiveness during his visit to his Ukrainian colleague Rustem Umyerov.

- On November 17, the media reported that US President Joe Biden allowed Ukraine to use long-range ATACMS missiles on the territory of Russia.
- On the same day, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz apologized for calling Putin for the first time in two years, but admitted that he had not seen any changes in his position regarding the war in Ukraine.
