In Tbilisi, protesters held a march wearing masks with the image of billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili, the founder and honorary chairman of the ruling party in Georgia, “Georgian Dream”, reports Radio Liberty’s “Echo of the Caucasus” project.

Activists thus opposed recent legislative amendments which it is forbidden to wear masks during promotions.

Later it became known that at least six people were detained during a protest action near the police station in Tbilisi.

Several dozen people marched from the Sarajishvili metro station to the police station under the slogan “No to the police regime!”. Some participants of the rally demonstratively covered their faces with masks. Recently, it is forbidden to do this at protests in Georgia.

According to the police, some activists were fined. In response, they started chanting “Police everywhere – no justice anywhere.” Then the employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs began to detain one of the demonstrators, and others tried to prevent it. During the fight, the glass door of the department was broken.

The political crisis erupted after Georgian Dream won parliamentary elections in October, which the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe said were marred by irregularities, including cases of vote-buying, physical violence and intimidation.

Georgia won EU candidate status in December 2023, but relations with Brussels have been strained in recent months following the passage in May 2024 of a controversial “foreign agents” law pushed through parliament by Georgian Dream, which has been in power since 2012. .

On December 29, Mikheil Kavelashvili, whose candidacy was supported by Georgian Dream, was sworn in as president.
