Ukraine and Greece concluded an agreement on the sale of natural gas to Ukraine. Shipments will begin in January. This was announced by the Ukrainian president during a joint press conference with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Athens.
American liquefied gas will flow from the south to the north — from the port of Alexandroupolis to Odesa. The agreement is part of the energy package for the winter period, aimed at providing Ukraine with gas resource due to Russian attacks on its energy infrastructure.
– The Russians attack our infrastructure almost every night. Our agreements with Greece today are an important part of a large energy package to provide gas to Ukraine, Zelenskyi said.
Deliveries of American liquefied gas through Greece will make it possible to compensate for lost gas production in Ukraine and strengthen the country’s energy stability.
– The supply of gas will start already in January, and it is important that our initial agreements will be implemented in the first quarter, – noted the president.
Mitsotakis emphasized the strategic importance of the agreement.
– This is a new reliable energy highway that runs from south to north, from Greece to Ukraine. Greece is becoming a hub for supplying American liquefied gas to Central and Eastern Europe, he said.
Zelenskyi also expressed gratitude to international partners, in particular the United States, for their support in the implementation of the project.
– We will be able to receive energy resources from the USA through Greece, because it is truly such a global infrastructure that is available in Greece, – stated the president.
The agreements provide for prompt deliveries of gas in the first quarter of 2026 and long-term contracts. Gas from the Oleksandrupolis port will go to Odesa through Bulgaria, Romania and Moldova.
The president’s website states that the document was signed by Serhii Koretskyi, chairman of the board of Naftogaz of Ukraine, and Kostiantinos Xiferas, director general of the Greek state company DEPA Commercial.
As part of the future agreement, gas transportation to Ukraine will take place along a route jointly provided by operators of gas transportation systems of five European states.
The supply of American LNG will be ensured through ATLANTIC–SEE, in which DEPA has 40%, says the website of Naftogaz.
- On November 16, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi arrived in Greece, and the head of state plans to visit France and Spain in the future.
- On October 28, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi informed about the formation of the Energy Coalition to help Ukraine due to Russian attacks on its energy sector.
