The foreign ministers of Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Great Britain, the United States and the high representative of the European Union, Josep Borrell, are preparing a response to the introduction of North Korean troops into Russian territory.
“We confirm our unwavering commitment to support Ukraine, which defends its freedom, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity. We are working with our international partners on a coordinated response to this new development,” the joint statement said.
Ministers also expressed “serious concern” in connection with the deployment of North Korean troops in the Kursk region of Russia.
The statement says that North Korea’s direct support for Russia’s war against Ukraine means the aggressor country’s desperate attempts to compensate for its losses, as well as a dangerous expansion of the conflict, which will have serious consequences for peace and security in Europe and the Indo-Pacific region.
The countries strongly condemned the strengthening of military cooperation between the DPRK and Russia.
It was recalled that the receipt or provision by North Korean soldiers of any training or other assistance related to the use of ballistic missiles or weapons is a direct violation of UN Security Council resolutions 1718, 1874 and 2270.
“We are also deeply concerned about the potential for any transfer of nuclear or ballistic missile-related technology from Russia to the DPRK in violation of relevant UNSC resolutions. We call on the DPRK to stop providing assistance to Russia in its war of aggression,” the statement said.
Participation of North Korean troops in the war against Ukraine
