Details: According to FT officials, discussions with Trump’s new team in recent weeks indicated that they had not yet decided how to settle the war and that support for Ukraine would continue after Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20.

“The whole team (Trump. – Ed.) is obsessed with power and wants to look strong, so they are changing their approach to Ukraine,” said one of the sources.

It added that the new US administration is also wary of comparisons with the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan, and Trump does not want something similar to happen again in Ukraine.

Also, according to the Financial Times article, Trump’s team changed the time frame for resolving the war in Ukraine from “24 hours” to several months, “which European partners saw as a sign that his administration will not give up support for Kyiv immediately.”

As the FT writes, European interlocutors convince Trump and his team that the continuation of US military aid is necessary to strengthen Kyiv’s position in the peace negotiations and help bring Moscow back to the negotiating table.

For example, in December, French representatives told Trump’s entourage that strengthening Ukraine’s positions on the battlefield meant stopping Russia’s advance in the east of the country, and if the Russian Federation continued to seize territories, negotiations would not be possible.

The day before, Trump’s chosen special representative for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, said that he aims to try to find a solution to the current full-scale war within 100 days of the inauguration of the new president.

Donald Trump previously assured that he “will not leave Ukraine” in his attempts to settle the Russian-Ukrainian war.
