Western countries are discussing a security guarantee for Ukraine, which can be implemented after a peace agreement is concluded. Financial Times writes about it with reference to sources.

The interlocutors of the publication said that the first line of defense should be the demilitarized zone at the border, perhaps under the control of peacekeepers from the third country in agreement with Kiev and Moscow.

The second line of defense will be Ukrainian troops, armed and NATO trained. They will provide the main defense.

The third line of defense is the European restraint forces, which are located in the depths of the country and receive rear support from the United States.

Security guarantees for Kiev are a key issue in the end of the war. Their discussion became more active after the meeting of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky with US President Donald Trump and European colleagues in Washington.

According to media reports, as part of the so-called coalition, the United Kingdom suggested that the Typhoon fighter jets in the west of Ukraine and a brigade from 3000-5000 servicemen to train the Ukrainian army. France, Canada and Australia could also send troops to the west of Ukraine. The Czech Republic could be part of peacekeeping forces in Ukraine, it was stated by President Peter Paul. Lithuania has also declared the willingness to provide peacekeeping troops for a possible mission in Ukraine.

Bloomberg previously reported that about 10 countries were ready to send their troops to the territory of Ukraine after the war.

Washington emphasizes that he does not intend to direct his troops to the territory of Ukraine, but is ready to provide intelligence, means of observation, as well as to participate in the development of the Ukrainian air defense system. At the same time, part of the US Presidential Administration Donald Trump is skeptical of possible guarantees, fearing the involvement of the United States in a new conflict.

Russia denies against the deployment of any Western troops. Russian Foreign Minister Serhiy Lavrov said that negotiations on security guarantees without Moscow are a “path to nowhere.” According to him, security guarantees discussed between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul in 2022 are a “very good example” of what the Kremlin will approve.
