Details: Four informed sources reported Financial Times that members of the European Commission and high -ranking officials who go to the IMF and the World Bank next week have recently provided new security instructions on safety measures.
According to them, these rules are reminiscent of protocols that are used when traveling to China or Ukraine, where ordinary electronics are forbidden to take due to the risks of tracking from Russian or Chinese special services.
European officials are increasingly perceiving the United States as a potential source of risk for security, which reflects a noticeable cooling in the relationship between Brussels and Washington after Donald Trump’s return to the White House in January.
The European Commission has confirmed that they have recently viewed security protocols, but reflected from the disclosure of details. According to representatives, the EU Foreign Policy Service also participated in the process of developing new instructions, as is usually the case in such cases.
New rules concerning US travel contain clear instructions for employees – in particular, to switch off phones at the border and store them in special protective covers to avoid unauthorized access in case of loss of supervision.
Particular anxiety is caused by American practice, which allows border guards to remove personal devices – smartphones and laptops – and check their contents without prior permission of the owner.
Against this background, Brussels and Washington continue sensitive negotiations with a number of strategic topics where both parties could be interested in gathering confidential information.
From April 21 to April 26, three European Commissaries will be in Washington at the IMF and World Bank’s annual meetings.
