Back in 2022, the Belgian video game development company Larian was operating with a loss of almost a quarter of a million dollars. That all changed after the resounding success of the role-playing game Baldur’s Gate 3.
In 2022, Larian’s total revenue was only €22.7 million (US$24 million or £19 million). By the end of the year, the company received losses in the amount of 214 thousand euros (223 thousand US dollars or 178 thousand pounds sterling). Already last year, Larian increased its profits 20 times and earned 427 million euros ($446 million or £356 million). This was thanks to the release of the wildly successful game Baldur’s Gate, based on the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop role-playing system.
This year, the company received 249 million euros (around $260 million or around £208 million), according to the Irish Independent. This figure assumes that the company has sold more than 15 million copies of its game.
NV Techno wrote that Larian has abandoned the idea of continuing the Baldur’s Gate series of games despite its wild success. Earlier this year, the company confirmed that it was working on two RPGs of its own outside of the Dungeons & Dragons universe.
