A magnetic storm has been recorded on Earth in recent days, but the geomagnetic situation should stabilize by Christmas.
This is reported by the British Geological Survey.
According to scientists, the planet continues to be under the influence of the high-speed flow of the solar wind, which comes from the large coronal hole on the Sun. At the same time, it is expected that during December 24 and 25, the influence of this flow will gradually weaken.
Experts predict calm or moderately active geomagnetic conditions, without the development of a full-fledged magnetic storm. Magnetic storms are disturbances in the Earth’s magnetic field that occur as a result of increased solar activity. They are caused by solar flares and coronal mass ejections — streams of charged particles that reach Earth and interact with the magnetosphere.
The intensity of magnetic storms is assessed using the Kp-index, which has a scale from 0 to 9. Indicators of 5 and above are considered a magnetic storm. According to forecasts, the value of the Kp-index will not exceed 4 on December 24, which indicates the absence of dangerous geomagnetic disturbances.
