For the second time in a week, ZANP was on the verge of blackout due to Russian shelling – the Ministry of Energy

“Currently, the station is connected to the Ukrainian power system by only one power transmission line. In case of disconnection of the last line at the Zaporizhzhia station, another complete blackout will take place””, — write: www.radiosvoboda.org

The Ministry of Energy states that as a result of Russian shelling, one of the two power lines of the occupied Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant was cut off.

“Currently, the station is connected to the Ukrainian power system by only one power transmission line. In case of disconnection of the last line at the Zaporizhzhia station, another complete blackout will take place. This is a serious violation of the conditions of safe operation and threatens the development of an accident,” the ministry emphasized.

Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko said that for the second time this week, there is a real threat of a blackout at the Zaporizhzhia NPP due to Russian shelling.

“Today in Vienna, a meeting of the Board of Governors of the IAEA will take place, and we insist on the immediate full implementation of the resolution on the return of the occupied station to the control of Ukraine. This is the only way to guarantee the safe operation of Zaporizhzhya NPP,” he said.

The Ministry of Energy added that energy workers will start restoring full power to the station, as long as the security situation allows.

The IAEA has not yet commented on the situation.

Recently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia stated that the Russian Federation can stop the work of specialists of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) at the ZNPP if it considers such work to be inappropriate.

The Ukrainian “Energoatom” called such statements “an act of nuclear terrorism.”

Zaporizhzhia NPP is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. Russian troops occupied the city of Energodar and the nearby Zaporizhzhya NPP at the beginning of March 2022.

The territory of the station is periodically subjected to shelling, for which Ukraine and Russia blame each other. The Ukrainian authorities also stated that the Russian army used the nuclear power plant to store military equipment and deploy its servicemen.
