A couple of penguins laid their first egg this year near the Akademik Vernadskyi station. The find was discovered by a biologist of the 29th UAE Svitozar Davydenko. This was reported by the National Antarctic Science Center.
“According to the term, I already understood that the first egg was about to appear. So I purposefully searched and checked the nests, because it is very important for us to fix the exact date. With it, we can track whether there are any changes over the years and how it depends on external conditions, including climate change,” said Svetozar Davydenko.
The egg was discovered on a rock near the DNA house of the laboratory, in which Ukrainian scientists receive radio frequencies for geocosm research.
Now, the biologist also shared a tip on how to quickly find a nest with an egg: “During the nesting period, when biologists make a detour and approach the nests, the penguins usually leave. If the penguin behaves in the opposite way – when the scientist approaches, it stays in the nest and clings tightly to it, then there is definitely an egg there.”
On Galindez Island, where the station of Ukrainian polar explorers is located, subarctic penguins mostly nest. Birds lay two eggs, rarely three. However, the process does not take place at the same time, because males and females incubate them alternately. Currently, there is a lot of snow on the island, so not all penguin nests are decorated. However, those located on the heights are suitable for hatching eggs.
