In particular, the number of flood victims in southwestern Poland rose to five after the body of a surgeon who was returning from hospital duty was found in the city of Nysa on Monday morning, firefighters said.

Police in the Czech Republic said one woman had drowned in the northeast of the country, which has been suffering from record rainfall since Thursday. Seven more people are missing.

At least three people died in Austria, and seven in Romania.

The Polish government declared a state of natural disaster in the affected areas and said it had allocated 1 billion zlotys ($260 million) to help those affected.

The capital of Slovakia, Bratislava, and the capital of Hungary, Budapest, are preparing for possible flooding due to rising water levels in the Danube.

Hungarian Interior Minister Sándor Pinter said efforts were focused on keeping the river and its tributaries within their borders, and said up to 12,000 soldiers were ready to help.

In Austria, water levels in rivers and reservoirs dropped overnight as the rain eased, but officials said they were preparing for a second wave as more rain was expected.
