Details: Finland’s armed forces have purchased hundreds of SkyWiper Omni Max jammers made by Lithuanian company NT Service, Colonel Mano-Mikael Nokelainen, Finland’s air defense inspector, told Reuters.

Jammers that create a protective dome for hundreds of meters to block drone control, video and navigation signals. They are planned to be placed around critical infrastructure, including around military bases.

In addition to the silencers, the Finnish military has purchased Airfence portable drone detectors made by the Finnish company Sensofusion and optional Smash rifle sights made by the Israeli company Smartshooter, which make it easier to target and shoot down drones.

The new equipment is designed to counter small reconnaissance drones, Nokelainen said, declining to share details about Finland’s capabilities to counter larger drones.

Reuters adds that Finland has a fleet of nearly 1,000 reconnaissance FPV drones – some made in the US and some by Finnish company Insta – for training purposes.

Finland will train around 500 new drone operators every year, according to army commander Lieutenant General Pasi Valimaki.

The Finnish military also plans to order more drones of various sizes and types, as well as anti-drone equipment next year, but Valimäki said there is no point in stockpiling too many devices that could become obsolete due to rapid technological developments in the field.

“We must optimize the number of purchases, that is, their volume, in accordance with our training tasks. Then we must create production facilities in case of crisis situations,” said the lieutenant general.

We will remind:

  • The President of Finland, Alexander Stubb, in his speech at the Helsinki Security Forum security conference in September, expressed doubt that Russia would launch the same drone raid on his country as it did in Poland.
  • Similar incidents involving drones have become more frequent in recent weeks, particularly in Denmark. On the night of September 25, unknown UAVs again flew over the territory of Denmark – in particular, near military facilities. Because of them, the airport of the city of Aalborg in the north of Denmark was suspended.
  • The government considers the new UAV incident over Denmark to be a hybrid attack, primarily aimed at psychological impact, and that something similar is likely to happen again.
  • A drone was spotted over the Valaiaskoski power plant in the Finnish city of Rovaniemi at the end of September.
