Details: As Fico stated, Slovakia can “stop any humanitarian aid to Ukraine, decide on a significant reduction or complete cancellation of benefits for Ukrainian refugees in Slovakia, or stop the supply of electricity in emergency situations.”

He also noted that at the political level, the country can use the right of veto on a number of decisions in the European Union.

However, Fico noted, Slovakia will take such steps only if it “has no other way out.”

He said that his threats are an opportunity to show how the leader of a sovereign country should behave.

Fico also announced that a group is being immediately created to discuss the consequences of stopping the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine, which will include representatives of Slovakia, the European Commission and Ukraine.

“This is a serious problem, and Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen is aware of it,” said the Slovak Prime Minister.

Separately, he praised the “constructive negotiations” held on Thursday, January 9, with the European Commission, which, according to him, is very interested in solving this problem.

Prehistory:

  • The contract between Ukraine and Russia for gas transit to Europe expired at the end of 2024 after the Ukrainian side decided not to renew it.
  • Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico sharply criticized Kyiv for these actions and wrote a letter to EU leaders, where he expressed dissatisfaction with the actions of the Ukrainian side.
  • He also threatened to cut off electricity supplies or cut aid to Ukrainian refugees in Slovakia in response.
