Fair elections will be after a fair peace – Zelenskyi in the Council

Current Ukrainian legislation does not provide for holding elections during martial law, so in fact both President Volodymyr Zelenskyi and the Verkhovna Rada continue to exercise their powers”, — write: www.radiosvoboda.org

Ukraine cannot hold elections until the end of the war against Russia, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said on November 19 in the Verkhovna Rada while presenting the “Internal Stability Plan”.

“We all know that the Constitution of Ukraine and the law will not allow elections to be held in wartime. And no one in the world demanded and does not demand this from Ukraine. But we have some people in Ukraine who, perhaps, are so hungry for this that they want to fight inside our state more than for the sake of our state, they want political disputes in the trenches, like in TV studios. This is harmful for Ukraine. Ukraine first needs a fair peace, and then the Ukrainians will hold fair elections,” said the head of state from the rostrum of the parliament.

The powers of the President of Ukraine and the current convocation of the Verkhovna Rada were supposed to end in 2024 – five years after the presidential and parliamentary elections, respectively. But the current Ukrainian legislation does not provide for holding elections during martial law, so in fact both Volodymyr Zelenskyi and the Verkhovna Rada continue to exercise their powers.
