The German publication Bild recorded the boarding of a group of German officers and soldiers on an Icelandair flight. “The mission ended earlier than planned, and there were no public statements or official clarifications from Berlin,” the newspaper emphasized.
Journalists reported that the return order came from Germany early this morning, in connection with which all planned meetings and events were urgently canceled.
“Even the day before, the head of the group, Stefan Pauli, said that the military is waiting for Berlin’s decision on possible further steps,” the publication noted.
It is noted that the reasons for the sudden departure of the German military have not yet been named.
“According to one version, the decision may be related to the aggravation of the situation around Greenland and trade threats from US President Donald Trump, but there is no official confirmation of this,” the publication wrote.
What did the German Ministry of Defense say?Later, the German Ministry of Defense said that in fact everything went according to plan, they say that the visit of the German military to Greenland was planned for only 2 days – from January 15 to 17.
According to the Ministry of Defense, they were going to extend the visit to January 18, but abandoned this idea due to bad weather on the island.
At the same time, the Bundeswehr called the visit itself a success. Lt. Col. Peter Milevchuk, commenting on the results of the mission, said that cooperation with the Danish military was “as constructive as possible.”
Landing of German troops in GreenlandJust two days ago – on January 16, a group of 15 experienced German soldiers flew to Greenland. This group included servicemen of the air force, navy and land forces, logisticians and air transportation experts.
It was assumed that in Greenland they would study where and how large exercises could be held on the island together with Denmark.
