Former FBI informant Oleksandr Smirnov is set to plead guilty Monday to lying about a bribery scheme involving President Joe Biden and his son Hunter that has become central to the Republican impeachment inquiry in Congress. Associated Press writes about it, reports UNN.

Details

According to court documents, Oleksandr Smirnov pleaded guilty in Los Angeles to a felony count in connection with the false story, as well as to tax evasion stemming from a separate indictment accusing him of concealing millions of dollars in income .

Smirnov has been behind bars since his February arrest on charges that he told his FBI supervisor that executives from the Ukrainian energy company Burisma allegedly paid President Biden and Hunter Biden approximately $5 million each in 2015.

Under the plea agreement, prosecutors and the defense agreed to recommend a prison term of four to six years.

According to prosecutors, Smirnov worked as an informant for more than ten years. However, according to court documents, Smirnov had only a routine business relationship with Burisma. The local FBI office investigated the allegations and recommended that the case be closed in August 2020, according to charging documents.

No evidence has emerged that Joe Biden acted corruptly or took bribes in his current or previous position as vice president.

Although his identity was not publicly known before the indictment, Smirnov’s statements played an important role in the efforts of Republicans in Congress to investigate the activities of the president and his family, and also helped initiate the impeachment inquiry into Biden in the House of Representatives. Before Smirnov’s arrest, Republicans demanded that the FBI release an unredacted form of documents supporting the unverified claims, though they admitted they could not confirm their veracity.

It was previously reported that Oleksandr Smirnov entered into a plea agreement in the case of falsification of evidence against Joe and Hunter Biden
