Ukraine must actively oppose corrupt politicians and businessmen in order to get closer to joining the European Union.
EU Justice Commissioner Michael McGrath stated this in an interview with Politico.
He emphasized that the governments of the member countries will not support Kyiv in its pursuit of the EU, if the country does not demonstrate an effective system of combating high-level corruption. “Each candidate country must have a robust system for dealing with alleged cases of high-level corruption, with effective investigations and judicial decisions,” McGrath said.
The European Commissioner added that the same standards apply to all candidates, and the rule of law and justice reforms are key to joining the EU. He also emphasized that without the fulfillment of these standards, there will be no support from the member states.
McGrath noted that Ukraine is making significant efforts for reforms in the fight against corruption, and relations with the Ukrainian authorities are open and honest with regard to the requirements of the European Union.
