Following the results of the extraordinary informal meeting of the European Council, which ended on the night of January 22-23, the leaders of the EU member states adopted oral conclusions on EU-US relations, published under the signature of EU Secretary General Antonio Kosta.

Details: The January 22 summit of EU leaders on transatlantic relations ended after midnight and approved oral conclusions.

“The European Union and the United States have long been partners and allies… We believe that relations between partners and allies should be built on the basis of goodwill and respect,” says the document, which is at the disposal of “European Pravda”.

The document clarifies that Europe and the United States “have a common interest in the security of the Arctic region, in particular through cooperation within NATO.”

Literally from the document: “In this context, I want to be absolutely clear: The Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland have the full support of the European Union. Only the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland can make decisions on matters concerning Denmark and Greenland.”

Details: The conclusions state that “the announcement of the absence of new US tariffs on Europe is positive.”

“The introduction of additional tariffs would be incompatible with the trade agreement between the EU and the US. Now our attention should be focused on promoting the implementation of this agreement,” the document emphasizes.

At the same time, it is reported that the EU will continue to “defend its interests and protect itself, its member states, its citizens and its companies from any form of coercion – it has the necessary powers and tools for this and will use them as needed.”

Literally from the conclusions of the European Council: “We remain ready to continue to constructively interact with the United States on all issues of common interest, in particular regarding the creation of conditions for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.”

Details: EU leaders at the same time have “serious doubts about a number of elements of the Peace Council’s charter, in particular regarding its mandate, governance and compatibility with the UN Charter.”

“We are ready to work together with the US on the implementation of a comprehensive peace plan for Gaza, provided that the Peace Council fulfills its mission as a transitional administration in accordance with UN Security Council resolution 2803,” they warned.

Antoniou Costa said that the next – also extraordinary – meeting of EU leaders, which will be held on February 12 in Brussels, “will be a strategic discussion dedicated to strengthening the Single Market in the new geo-economic context.”

We will remind: On the sidelines of the summit of EU leaders on December 22, French President Emmanuel Macron also said that he wants Europe to be respected, otherwise the EU will take decisive action.

It will be recalled that on January 21, US President Donald Trump announced that he had formed the basis for the future agreement regarding Greenland, thanks to which he does not plan to introduce tariffs against European countries.

In turn, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen outlined the “red lines” of such an agreement with the US: the status of a sovereign state is not discussed.
