Details: He emphasized that the European Union has a number of response tools to protect the EU’s space assets in light of such potential attacks.

“First, we have Galileo, which already exists and is capable of detecting and deterring such attacks. In addition, we recently took a step forward in our four European flagship programs that we proposed in our defense roadmap,” the spokesperson said.

According to him, the European Union, together with its member states, is introducing the European Space Shield flagship project “precisely to protect our satellites and space assets.”

“We know that Russia is doing this, and we are ready to confront it if the need arises,” Thomas Rainier emphasized.

Prehistory:

  • Recently, it became known about the interception of at least ten key satellites of European countries by Russian spacecraft, which endangers the confidential information of the states of the continent.
  • Last week, European Commissioner for Defense and Space Andrius Kubilius announced the launch of the Govsatcom program, which will combine the existing communication capabilities of satellites of 27 member states.
  • In addition, the EU is preparing to create a secure satellite communications system by 2030 for military intelligence, as doubts grow about the US’s commitment to European defense.
  • It also became known on February 3 that the European Union plans to create a platform for the exchange of military data without the participation of the United States by 2030.
