Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan intends to present his proposal on freezing the Russian-Ukrainian war at the meeting of the leaders of the “Group of Twenty” countries in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on November 18, Bloomberg reported with reference to sources.

According to them, Erdogan’s proposal envisages that Ukraine will postpone the discussion of the country’s accession to NATO for at least 10 years.

Erdogan also proposes to create a demilitarized zone in the east of Donbas and station international troops there “as an additional guarantee.” In addition, the Turkish president offers to provide Ukraine with military supplies as compensation for agreeing not to become a member of NATO.

Turkish officials told Bloomberg that it would be difficult for Ukraine to accept such a proposal, but that, in their opinion, this is the most realistic approach. The agency writes that Turkish officials “would like to postpone discussions about the long-term fate of the occupied territories and focus on ensuring a stable ceasefire.”

Erdogan hopes he can convince Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi to take part in the talks in Istanbul because, according to the agency’s sources, the Turkish leader “has received intelligence that indicates that Ukraine may lose many more territories in the coming months if the hostilities are not stopped.” “.

The G20 summit will be held in Rio de Janeiro on November 18-19. Russia and Turkey belong to this group, while Ukraine does not. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced earlier that he will not go to the summit in order not to “disrupt” the work of the forum due to the fact that there is an international arrest warrant against him.

Recently, Ukraine’s allies have stepped up efforts to persuade the parties to the conflict to start negotiations. On November 15, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had his first telephone conversation with Vladimir Putin in two years. French President Emmanuel Macron did not rule out that he could talk to Putin, but only when the “context” is suitable for this. Macron believes that Putin “does not want peace” and is not ready to negotiate about it.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi said in an interview with Suspilnyi on November 16 that the Ukrainian government “must do everything” to end the war diplomatically in 2025.
