Energoatom responded to Russia’s threats to stop the IAEA’s work at the Zaporizhzhia NPP

Russia is threatening to stop the work of the IAEA mission at the ZNPP – “this is an act of nuclear terrorism”, according to the statement of the national nuclear power generating company “Energoatom”.

The company noted that the Russian Foreign Ministry is threatening to stop the IAEA mission at the Zaporizhzhia NPP due to the statements of its general director, Raphael Grossi, who noted that the experts will remain at the station “until the possible freezing of the war.”

The Kremlin emphasized that “the mission’s stay at the ZNPP is possible only with its permission.”

“It is important to note that the presence of international IAEA experts at the Zaporizhzhia NPP and other nuclear power plants of Ukraine is the result of agreements reached during the meeting of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi with Grossi,” the company said.

According to Energoatom, “during the negotiations, the parties agreed on the presence of IAEA missions at all Ukrainian nuclear facilities to ensure constant monitoring and prevention of possible incidents.”

“Let’s emphasize – at all Ukrainian nuclear facilities, in particular at the ZNPP. Ukraine’s initiative was an important step in strengthening international trust in the safety of Ukrainian nuclear power plants, especially in wartime conditions,” the company added.

Ukraine, according to the nuclear power generating company, “demonstrates openness and willingness to cooperate, unlike Russia, which continues to act as a nuclear terrorist country, ignoring international laws and regulations.”

Energoatom stressed that “threats to stop the IAEA mission at the ZNPP confirm that the Kremlin has no intention of complying with any norms of international law.”

“Maintaining the work of the IAEA at the ZNPP is a matter not only of the security of Ukraine, but also of the world. The international community must ensure continuous monitoring and hold Russia accountable,” added Energoatom.

Russia can stop the work of specialists of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) if it considers such work to be inappropriate. This is stated in the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation published on November 14.

Zaporizhzhia NPP is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. Russian troops occupied the city of Energodar and the nearby Zaporizhzhya NPP at the beginning of March 2022.

The territory of the station is periodically subjected to shelling, for which Ukraine and Russia blame each other. The Ukrainian authorities also stated that the Russian army used the nuclear power plant to store military equipment and deploy its servicemen.
