“Energoatom” may not find money to build new reactors due to corruption – FT

Due to corruption scandals, it is unlikely that Energoatom will attract billions of dollars for the construction of new nuclear reactors.

About this writes the Financial Times newspaper.

Ukraine’s three operating nuclear plants produce almost half of the country’s electricity, and two reactors will need to be replaced in 10 years.

In January, Galushchenko announced that Energoatom would begin construction of four new reactors. However, it is unlikely that the company, which has been involved in corruption scandals, will be able to attract the billions of dollars needed for this project.

Galushchenko’s plan to purchase old Russian technology in Bulgaria for $600 million was halted after protests by lawmakers this summer.

The only Ukrainian energy company that was able to attract significant international financing is the state operator Ukrenergo. But after the controversial dismissal of its head, Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, on September 3, further investments were in question, the newspaper writes.

Kudrytskyi said the loan scheme for investors in small power plants, introduced in July, would bring dozens of new players to the market and create competition for Energoatom, which the energy ministry had tried to delay.

We will remind:

The Security Service of Ukraine detained Oleksandr Skopych, director of control and audit work at Energoatom.

Oleksandr Skopych, director of control and audit work of NAEC “Energoatom”, who was arrested on Saturday for bribery, was ordered to take a preventive measure in the form of bail in the amount of 1 million hryvnias.
