– Elina, it was an amazing fight on your part. How did you manage to turn the tide after the first set?
– Yes, it was not easy. I didn’t start the match the way I would have liked. At the beginning of the tournament I felt pretty good, I had good matches in the first two rounds. But yes, I would like to start better today, but as it is, it is as it is. I was very happy that I was able to find my game and rhythm in the second set. Obviously, I played very well in the third set.
– How impressive were you today to beat Paolini? It seems to have been very strong.
– I don’t think about it that way. I’m just trying to enjoy this win because I really struggled after the first set. It is not easy to get back into the match, especially against such a strong opponent who returns a lot of balls and practically does not make mistakes that could help make a comeback. So yeah, I’m really glad I was able to find my pitch and rhythm. I am also proud of my fighting spirit that I showed today.
– We saw Gael in the box near the court. How much does your mutual support affect your results in this tournament?
– At most big tournaments, we support each other. It means a lot to us when there is someone around who understands what you are going through. Yes, it is very pleasant for me personally. I don’t know how it is for other players, but for me it’s a special feeling when you can go back to your room and talk a little bit about the matches, about the upcoming matches. When we get home, we completely switch off from tennis. We just enjoy our time together as a family, as mom and dad with our daughter. Yes, this is a unique connection that we have. I’m very happy with how we’re handling it. Today was a great day for us: victories over players from the top 4 and excellent tennis in our performance.
