In his opinion, it is more appropriate for Ukraine to use small blocks based on SMR technologies, which are usually the use of nuclear reactors with a capacity of up to 300 megawatts, which are designed from modules. Their construction and the cost of operation are less than that of traditional blocks. He added that the blocks will at least partially compensate for the lost shunting capacity.
“More effectively in Ukraine to build decentralized capacities, decentralized generation and look at SMR, that is, small nuclear blocks of shunting and, in the future, try to return the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant. In my opinion, it is more rational than the Russian scrap, which has been exposed for more than 25 years. The kilowatt-hour power is comparable to large blocks.
Omelchenko added that small blocks can also be built at the NPP platforms. He added that SMR reactors have different manufacturers, including Rolse Royse and Holtec companies, and the state needs to choose a winner at the competition “who will give better conditions for both finances and security.”
At the same time, the expert noted that it is not necessary to count on the construction of small blocks in the near future.
“It will be for 2030-2035, that is, it is a long prospect,” Omelchenko stated.
