The Kyiv police reported that they uncovered a corruption scheme of embezzlement of 2 million hryvnias during the purchase of granite slabs for the columbarium at the Forest Cemetery – the former director of the funeral service was suspected.

Details: Law enforcement officers established that in March 2019, by order of a specialized utility company of the KMDA, they decided to build a columbarium wall on the territory of the Forest Cemetery, for which the ex-director of the funeral service wanted “special” granite.
Verbatim police: “The ex-director of the enterprise, in order to artificially inflate the price, during the preparation of the estimate documentation provided the expert state organization with a type of granite that is not available and indicated its non-existent characteristics. Later, based on the contract concluded with the enterprise, the contracting organization supplied almost 1.5 thousand sq m of granite facing blocks, which were later used as a memorial board at the place of burial of urns with ashes after cremation.
Details: The investigation proved that the city overpaid the contractor more than UAH 2 million for granite, the “special” characteristics of which exist only on paper.
Currently, the ex-director of the ritual service – a 53-year-old from Kyiv – has been charged with 4 Art. 191 (waste of budget funds committed by an official in large amounts) and ch. 2 Art. 366 (official forgery) of the Criminal Code.
The sanctions of these articles provide up to 8 years of imprisonment with deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for a period of up to 3 years.
The police emphasized that this man is also a suspect in another criminal proceeding related to the embezzlement of budget funds during the construction of the columbarium wall. It is indicated that in that case the ex-serviceman deliberately overestimated the price of clinker bricks by almost 900,000 hryvnias.
