Dog keepers living on the territory of Chernobyl noticed a group of dogs with blue fur – this phenomenon was the first in this zone. A group called “Chernobyl Dogs” shared a video showing several packs. Keepers note that the animals were not blue last week and are trying to catch them to examine the causes of the change in coat color. At the moment, about 700 dogs live in the exclusion zone and receive regular food and medical care.

The dogs that remained after the evacuation in 1986 are being actively studied for radiation exposure as they have adapted to the toxic environment. Recent studies have shown that the data may indicate genetic mutations that are passed down from generation to generation. Scientists have discovered more than 400 genetic markers associated with adaptation to a polluted environment, which contributes to the survival of animals in this area.
Further research will help to understand how dogs were able to survive in conditions of extreme radiation danger. The results of these studies can be important for the scientific understanding of the adaptation of animals to contaminated environments and potentially indicate new cases in the study of the effects of radiation pollution on living organisms.
