A woman who was being treated for West Nile fever died in Khmelnytskyi. She developed a severe complication of fever – meningoencephalitis.

“Since September 1 of this year, 6 patients – 4 men and 2 women – have been treated at the Khmelnytsky Infectious Disease Hospital with a confirmed diagnosis of West Nile fever. All patients during hospitalization complained of a sharp rise in body temperature up to 39.9 C, headache, pain in the throat, muscles, joints and back, weakness, nausea. 5 patients were discharged after treatment with recovery, doctors were unable to save one of the patients due to late seeking medical help and the development of a severe complication of fever – meningoencephalitis,” the message reads.
It is noted that there is another case of fever in a man who was treated in another medical institution in the city of Khmelnytskyi.
Four patients were diagnosed with meningoencephalitis, two patients had a febrile-articular form of the disease. The age of the patients is from 20 to 70 years, five of them are residents of the city.
In Kyiv, three people died of West Nile fever out of 17 infected people who had a confirmed diagnosis.
The main source of this disease is 17 species of migratory birds. In addition, the virus can be found in mammals, rodents, bats, but in a lower concentration and for a short time. The vector of the disease is mosquitoes. The virus enters the human body during a bite. After an illness, persistent immunity is formed.
For individual prevention of West Nile fever, protective clothing, protective nets on windows, repellents are used, specific prevention of the disease, in particular vaccines, has not been developed.
The first cases of West Nile fever were recorded in Khmelnytskyi on August 31.
