Doctors and medics were never prepared and still are not prepared for blood transfusions. The educational problem is that in almost three years of full-scale invasion, the university programs of medical institutions have not been changed in any way. This was stated by an anesthesiologist of the 12th special brigade of Azov NSU with the call sign “Svitanok” on the air of the telethon, reports UNN.

“Early transfusion (blood transfusion – ed.) is a very good practice and it is generally quite the norm in the armies of NATO countries and it is perceived as something obvious. In our army, unfortunately, it is still far from obvious. As a rule , dealing with these things, that is, blood transfusions, and not even only combat medics, but already at the stabilization point, where there are already doctors, where the equipment can already be placed, I cannot say that it is frequent, it happens somewhere, let’s say so,” said “Svitanok”.

He noted that his brigade and several other brigades are doing this.

“But, to a large extent, at least in the areas where I had to work, this is not a mass phenomenon,” Svitanok said.

He noted that blood storage and transfusion are very expensive things.

“I do not dare to say that the army is fully equipped with these things,” Svitanok said.

He emphasized that doctors and medics have never been trained in Ukraine and are still not trained for blood transfusions.

“(Doctors, medics – ed.) were never prepared and still are not prepared for blood transfusions. That is, our university problem, our educational problem is that for almost 3 years of full-scale invasion, the university programs of medical institutions have not been changed in any way,” – said “Dawn”.

In addition, he noted that massive bleeding is the largest cause of death on the battlefield.

“Even if we saved (a person – ed.) directly from the battlefield, after that such a complication develops that it is literally almost impossible to save the wounded in the future,” Svitanok said.

According to him, advanced units where combat medics work directly are equipped with a universal blood group and they can start transfusion literally in a trench or dugout.

When asked if there is cooperation between the Blood Transfusion Centers in the rear and the brigades in order to donate blood on a permanent basis, “Svitanok” answered: “In general, it is so. We cooperate, in principle there was no such thing that we did not have some group of blood. Injuries happen when a lot of this blood is needed. There is no time to simply go to the blood banks, because it is needed immediately.”

“Svitanok” noted that blood consists of components.

“As a rule, we are provided with components, and one of the difficulties is that we do not store platelets, because it is technically extremely difficult, in general, to store platelets at this stage. That’s why we often need whole blood,” Svitanok said.
