Paul McCartney, co-writer of The Beatles, has warned that artificial intelligence could be used to “rob” artists and called on the British government to ensure that future copyright reforms protect the creative industries. This is reported by Reuters. In December, Britain invited artists to license their work for use in AI training, but also said there should be an exception “to support the use of a wide range of material by AI developers that has not been copyrighted”. In an interview with the BBC, McCartney said he was concerned that only the tech giants would benefit if copyrights were not properly protected. “AI is a great thing, but it shouldn’t rob creative people. Make sure you protect creative thinkers, creative artists, or you won’t have them. It’s that simple,” McCartney said. The UK government is currently consulting on its copyright reforms, saying there is legal uncertainty about how existing laws are applied in the UK, which risks undermining investment and adoption of AI technologies. McCartney said there was a risk that artists could lose out if the changes weren’t properly addressed. “You get young guys, girls who write a great song and they don’t own it and they don’t have anything to do with it and anybody who wants to can just steal it. The truth is, the money goes somewhere, and they end up on streaming platforms – someone gets them, and it has to be the person who created them. It doesn’t have to be just some tech giant somewhere,” Paul added. Reminder: Major music labels and global artists sign letters against AI and file lawsuits against AI that generates music.
