Before the European Championship, the national team of Ukraine played at the Yellow Cup international tournament, in which it won against the national team of Bahrain and lost to the national team of Switzerland and North Macedonia. Handball player of the national team of Ukraine Dmytro Artemenko in a comment for Suspilne Sport, he spoke about his performances at the Yellow Cup and shared his expectations for Euro-2026.
“I am very happy that I got to this championship with the national team. The second championship is of course a significant moment for me, even though I am already 29 years old. I am very happy, I want to help the team, I will give all my strength.
Everything was as it should be: they did their job. They prepared both in defense and in attack. Not to lose 20 goals to everyone, but to show our power and strength, our country. The coach said that we are the best in our country, so we all came here to prove and show it, to play decently.
The tournament we played in Switzerland showed that we are step by step, but we are going to our best game. Yes, there were mistakes, there were losses, but we are working to make them less, to remove this deficiency. It’s good that there was this tournament, which showed what we lacked, what we need to add in training and remove it already at the Euro and play decently. Perhaps the confidence has increased. I wanted to play all the games 100%, but there are also experienced players. Yes, something was wrong, but it did its job.
At the European Championship, you have to play as a team, make fewer mistakes, be disciplined. Trust your teammates and, of course, respect your opponent. Our level, I believe, is very worthy, both at the individual level and as a team game. Yes, of course we pulled her up at the last meeting. We are at a high level – God willing, we will play well. We have experienced players, there are young ones, and no one gives up. Everyone is working, and if there are mistakes, they are working on them, the more experienced are more helpful and suggestive. This is teamwork, everyone does the same thing,” said Dmytro Artemenko.
